The Importance of Jingdezhen

Jingdezhen porcelain is produced in or near Jiangxi province in southern China.

According to Wikipedia (which means it's true until someone changes it) Jingdezhen is named after the Emporer Zhenzong in whose reign it became a major kiln site, around 1004.

By the 14th century it had become the largest centre of production of Chinese porcelain and has stayed that way. And yet it was a tiny remote village! So why? Well because Jingdezhen is close to

  • the best quality deposits of porcelain stone
  • is surrounded by forests which provide wood for the kilns and also
  • a river leading to river systems flowing north and south which facilitated transport.

Encyclopedia Brittanica says: In China the name Jingdezhen is virtually synonymous with porcelain

I say: In England the name Jingdezhen rhymes with porcelain if you try really hard. So you know, it's like fate (or something.)
