Dazzling, transluscent antique Japanese Imariware teacups with hand painted 24k gold details. This listing is for one Cup & Saucer.
If you are as interested as I am in porcelain, here's some fascinating things to look at. 1. Note this segmented style of alternating colours (in this case red and white - imariware colours are usually red, white navy blue & gold). Why is it interesting? Because Europeans liked to imitate the decor (which is what we call chinoiserie), but over time this segmentation became the pastel helter-skelter decor we so often see in miniature and/or lusterware mocha cups.
2. Can you see that the underglaze was fired before the red enamel flowers were drawn by hand over the top? ...these are chrysanthemums. Who cares? Well...the Japanese do!"The chrysanthemum's yellow flower symbolises the sun and the light (immortality) in Japan. The Japanese have proclaimed the chrysanthemum as their national symbol, and celebrate the 'Festival of Happiness' every year in honour of the chrysanthemum."
3. Now note the criss cross patterns... not just criss cross, these are stylized bamboo weaves. Who cares? Again..."One of the fastest-growing plants in the world, bamboo is as strong as any wood from a tree and just as durable. They begin to sprout anew each year in January and their sprouts are considered lucky for growth if eaten in the new year. Because of this, they are symbols of growth and endurance."
4. And finally the "arabesque" designs (aka. swirly patterns which look a little like baby ferns) called Tako-karakusa. This is the Octopus pattern or Octopus arabesque pattern. Guess who cares! It's a growing vine which signifies prosperity and longevity.Phew. The folk who made this tea set really want you to live a long time.
