The endless fascination and replication of the willow pattern is a beautiful statement about how we can reframe and reinterpret, creating new art at the edges of old. How one pattern can look so different - the intensity of the davenport willow for example, compared to the gaiety of this sky blue version by Gustavsberg.

Although Gustavsberg calls this Willow, this is actually the Mandarin pattern (from which Willow evolved) surrounded by the 'trellis dagger' border.

Just for fun, in the last picture is a pink willow serving plate by W.T. Copeland which dates from between 1867 and 1890 and is an exact replica - or original! - of this pattern.
