Almost too dazzlingly pretty a cup... which manages to escape being trite with some genuinely shabby chic touches; the handpainted blue stripes which don't quite reach the golden borders sometimes, or the gilt which has slightly worn away over time around the rims. Otherwise the cup has an amazing ensemble cuteness cast of a luster finish, a three footed base, scalloped rims, gold floral detail, crimson roses and of course polka segments.NB. Originally interchanging colour segments are derived from the common Imari patterns which had featured on Oriental porcelain for centuries, but which evolved into polka when it got to Europe.

This cup is mid century Japanese export; in the first half of the 20th century Japan's ceramics trade predominantly focused on commercial exports, and mainly manufactured European style porcelain as opposed to anything more, well, Japanese!
