A fabulous full size teapot for Ironstone fans, with the Watteau pattern in purple transferware. Out of all Masons transferware colours, I believe purple to be the rarest. It's documented that Masons began to manufacture goods in brown, then blue and then pink. I can't find purple documented which means it came later (and although I am sure there is method to their madness, maybe the first purple-ware was a mistake...?!!)

I've included a photo so you can see the difference (it really is purple and not pink!!)

Measures approx. 7.5H x 9.5W in.

There are two small nicks to the underside of the lid, and barely detectable colour bleed on the knob and handle (see pictures). Crazing throughout. Otherwise in excellent condition.

Watteau is a pattern named after Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684 –1721), a French painter who is credited with inventing the genre of "fêtes galantes." Which is you ask me is about crowds of people dressed in ball gowns getting frisky with each other in the open air. Masons however seems to have toned down the ardour.

Regarding the backstamp and age of the piece. It dates from 1924 (the underside is impressed with this number). The backstamp with the angular crown is consistent with this date.
