Tischenreuth (the town in Bavaria) was famous for the fine quality of porcelain produced from local clay, and is still much sought after today. Tischenreuth was taken over in 1927 by the even more celebrated Hutschenreuther, although Tischenreuth continued producing under its own brand. This particular Cup & Saucer is marked with a green shield PT Bavaria; underglaze stamp on back which indicates it was produced between 1927 and 1954. That bumps up its kudos a little (for people who are passionate about china) because it’s therefore both a Tischenreuth and a Hutschenreuther. These cups have clearly been used as the gilding is fairly worn. However, none have any chips or cracks, making it an acceptable payoff to my mind.

About the blue flower pattern: Great porcelain patterns are copied, or rather reinvented by various manufacturers, especially when one of them has been successful. That's why there are several very valuable blue flower cups and saucers out there, led by Royal Copenhagen's famous Blå Blomster (who established their version of the pattern in 1779). But whilst design plays a part so must coincidence, because blue was once the only colour able to stand the high temperature of the firing, and flowers are clearly a popular design motif. Sweden's most famous examples of blue flower "Blå Blom" pattern are not flowers, at all. Gustavsberg Blå Blom & Rörstrand Blå Blom are small bunches of grapes in raised relief at spaced intervals around the cup. This relief quirk of the blue flower pattern is true of Royal Copenhagen as well who produce theirs in two kinds - flat and raised.Nowadays Echt Kobalt is among the leaders for the blue flower trophy in Germany.

Tirschenreuth factory is closed so no longer in the running apart from where vintage is concerned.
