What always fascinates me about eggshell china is just how tough it is, especially as it is also known as 'bodiless ware' as it's so thin. This eggshell trio has the geisha lithophane impressed on the bottom of the cup which can be seen by holding the cup up to the light (lithophane means *light in stone* :)

Geisha girl porcelain was made in Japan for export from the late nineteenth century well into the first half of the 20th century, and this particular geisha is the garland geisha. The geisha porcelain is highly collectible (which of course means I'll be collecting it) as there are different versions of the geisha some much rarer than others.

On the back of the plate is written Made in Japan, so this piece in red and gold was probably manufactured in th 1940s.
