An extremely rare Harlequin mocha/espresso set by Stig Lindberg on his SA cup model. Like many of Stig's most famous designs it features a band of colour around the saucer rim, contrasted with a white centre. This design picks that up and repeats it on the cup. The series is aptly named... Colores.
Harlequin sets, I think are rather special. Although it might be commonplace to see multicoloured glazes now, not so long ago, achieving a colour through glaze (other than blue!) was very difficult indeed. So a range of Harlequin china was something of a landmark in the china world which occured in the 1930s. They were first manufactured in the traditional commedia del'arte colours - yellow, red, green and blue but quickly came to mean simply many colours.
These are the smallest cups of the SA model range with a high arch loop handle and small feet on the underside. Each cup holds approximately 2 fluid ounces. This listing is for 6 cups and saucers.
